Answer
My Department and Sport NI are committed to offering sports and leisure opportunities to a range of under-represented groups, including those with disabilities. This is demonstrated through a specific target in the Department’s Strategy for Sport, Sport Matters, to increase participation rates in sport and physical recreation among those with a disability. DCAL and Sport NI work with a range of organisations to offer such opportunities amongst those with Disabilities.
Over the last three years, up to March 2015, Disability Sport NI (DSNI), has received total funding of £1,029,726 from Sport NI to carry out activities that will support and develop disability sport at all levels and across the north of Ireland. The table at Annex A lists the DSNI programmes and funding awarded.
In addition, during the same period, Sport NI awarded £90,635 directly to sports clubs and community/voluntary/charity organisations through the Active Awards for Sports programme, to enable increased access to sport and physical activity projects for those with disabilities, at a grassroots/local level. Groups from the North West area that received funding under this programme are detailed at Annex B.
Generally, Sport NI will award funding to a governing body, including DSNI, which then exercises its discretion when making the investment. As such, neither DCAL, nor Sport NI, hold information on third party organisations which have applied to, or been allocated funding from, DSNI.
