Answer
Funding provided to Ulster University by the Department for the Economy, and the former Department for Employment and Learning over the last five complete financial years is summarised in the table below.
| 2015/16 £m | 2016/17 £m | 2017/18 £m | 2018/19 £m | 2019/20 £m | Total £m | |
| Recurrent Grant | 76.3 | 78.1 | 79.0 | 79.5 | 79.8 | 392.7 |
| Other Programmes | 8.1 | 7.7 | 8.3 | 8.2 | 8.1 | 40.4 |
| Capital Funding | 5.2 | 11.1 | 8.4 | 4.3 | 2.5 | 31.5 |
| Total | 89.6 | 96.9 | 95.7 | 92.0 | 90.4 | 464.6 |
‘Recurrent Grant’ is recurrent funding provided to Ulster University to support the continuation of all activities delivered by the University associated with their core activities of teaching and research.
‘Other Programmes’ funding is separate to ‘Recurrent Grant’ funding and is made up largely of funding for Postgraduate Awards, Student Support and Research Programmes however there is funding for a number of other smaller programmes also included in the total.
My Department provides ‘Recurrent’ and ‘Other Programmes’ funding to the Ulster University as a Higher Education Institution in its entirety. As an autonomous body, it is for Ulster University to decide how this funding is spent between campuses and my Department does not ask for this information. I am therefore unable to provide a breakdown of funding by campus.
‘Capital Funding’ is funding provided to Ulster University to contribute to the long-term financial sustainability of the University’s learning and teaching, and research activities and the supporting physical infrastructure. Capital funding by campus is summarised in the table below:
| Campus | 2015/16 £m | 2016/17 £m | 2017/18 £m | 2018/19 £m | 2019/20 £m | Total £m |
| Magee | £1.92 | £3.00 | £4.93 | £0.27 | £0.27 | £10.39 |
| Coleraine | £2.98 | £2.99 | £0.25 | - | £0.16 | £6.38 |
| Jordanstown | - | - | £0.37 | - | - | £0.37 |
| All Campuses | £0.32 | £5.13 | £2.85 | £3.99 | £2.07 | £14.36 |
| Total | £5.22 | £11.12 | £8.40 | £4.26 | £2.50 | £31.50 |
