Answer
While my Department provides funding and sets the strategic direction for the higher education sector, Ulster University is an autonomous institution and as such is responsible for its own decisions regarding the subjects it teaches. The creation of a Veterinary School at Coleraine campus is a matter for the University to consider.
The supply of veterinary surgeons in Northern Ireland is a policy objective for the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA). From my Department’s perspective, should a need be determined to establish a Veterinary School, it may be for DAERA to both argue the case and secure any required additional funding. I met with the Vice Chancellor of the University, Paul Bartholomew on 3rd February 2021 to discuss the University’s strategic plans for all of its campuses and requested sight of same.
