Answer

I do not routinely have conversations regarding either the options for, or benefits of, the installation of CCTV in any council area where anti-social behaviour (ASB) is being regularly reported. My Department has no funding mechanism available for CCTV related projects and is also not in a position to provide funding for CCTV, given existing ongoing priorities and constraints on budgets.

The Interfaces Programme does occasionally receive requests to contribute to the costs of upgrading CCTV cameras specifically linked to interface work. Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis but these are very peripheral engagements in the overall context of the provision of CCTV across Northern Ireland.

In terms of tackling ASB, my Department, together with the Northern Ireland Policing Board, provides substantial annual funding to Policing and Community Safety Partnerships (PCSPs) to lead on the Department’s response to community safety issues within each council area, including ASB issues.

PCSPs seek to address ASB by working with their local communities and other partners, including local statutory bodies/agencies and the voluntary and community sector, to develop appropriate actions to deal with, and reduce, the impact of ASB.
