Answer
Since August 2021, the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) has assisted the PSNI in carrying out four enforcement operations in the Portrush and Portstewart areas aimed at addressing road safety concerns associated with car cruise events.
During these operations a total of 63 modified cars were inspected by examiners, resulting in 51 vehicles (81%) being subjected to prohibition action due to breaches of the Construction & Use Regulations. 14 modified cars (22%) were immediately banned from use on our roads due to dangerous mechanical defects.
DVA will continue to provide technical support to the PSNI in such operations to help address the problem of unsafe modified cars being used on our roads.
Officials from Roads Northern Division have also had discussions with the PSNI regarding other measures to discourage anti-social driving and are proposing to provide raised table pedestrian crossings at Kerr Street, Portrush; additional speed cushions at Main Street, Portrush; a raised table at the pedestrian crossing on Portstewart Promenade; and explore the possible introduction of a part-time ban on right turns out of Harbour Place, Portstewart. Development work on these measures is currently ongoing with the intention of consulting formally on the legislation for these proposals later this year.
