Answer
Good employers recognise the challenges that many women can face within the workplace when experiencing symptoms of menopause. They similarly recognise the potential impact undergoing fertility treatment can have on the ability of employees to work during this period. They have flexible supportive working policies in place such as homeworking, flexible hours, or compassionate leave. I would encourage all employers to offer such flexible and supportive working arrangements for their staff.
The Labour Relations Agency, the Equality Commission and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions have published a guide to help promote equality in employment for women affected by menopause. All employers are recommended to consider this guide when developing their own workplace policies.
The Labour Relations Agency, the Equality Commission and websites such as NIBusinessInfo and NIDirect all provide valuable advice and guidance for employers and workers on these and a range of other workplace issues. Employers are recommended to take these sources of information into account when developing their own workplace policies.
