Answer
Geothermal energy is widely used in Europe and globally, however, there are very few installations in the north. The Energy Strategy recognised the potential for geothermal energy to support the Energy Strategy’s vision of net zero and affordable energy and the 2022 action plan committed to commencing a geothermal demonstration project. In February 2023, the Department commenced delivery of the geothermal demonstration project “GeoEnergy NI”. The project is aimed at encouraging demand for and unlocking investment in geothermal technology. The project comprises two geothermal exploratory and feasibility studies which will help unearth the heat beneath our feet. It is anticipated that the project will be delivered incrementally in the coming years with current feasibility studies due to be completed in early 2025.The project is supported by a communications and marketing strategy aimed at engaging and educating the public and more information can be found at: GeoEnergy NI - Unearthing The Heat Beneath Our Feet.
