Answer
The challenges faced by children and young people with special educational needs (SEN) and their families as they try to navigate a complex system in order to access support are well rehearsed. The various reports since 2017 and the numerous recommendations for change, point to the failings within the SEN system in its current form.
There is a clear requirement for transformation of our education system that will ensure high quality, child centred and sustainable SEN support and the End-to-End (E2E) Review of SEN has been established to bring forward early actions as well as longer term actions for systemic reform that will lead to improved outcomes for children and young people with SEN.
My department’s vision is that EVERY CHILD is happy, learning and succeeding and this is no different for those children and young people with SEN. I am committed to securing support from my Executive colleagues for any additional investment that is required to ensure that children with SEN get the right support, delivered by the right people, at the right time and in the right place.
