Answer
NISRA collates data on death registrations as collected by the General Register Office. Drug-related deaths are defined using the UK National Statistics definition where the underlying cause of death recorded on the death certificate is drug poisoning, drug abuse or drug dependence. Drug-related deaths are coded and reported according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) International Classification of Diseases (ICD tenth revision) using codes F11–F16, F18–F19, X40–X44, X60–X64, X85 and Y10–Y14.
The most recent annual statistics on drug-related deaths cover the registration year 2023. Figures for 2024 are currently being compiled and are expected to be published in early 2026.
