Answer
Road safety is a high priority for my Department, and I am committed to working proactively to make our roads safer and address the needs of all road users, particularly on rural roads where a significant proportion of our road network is located.
My Department takes an evidence-led and risk-based approach to identifying locations where safety interventions may be required, informed by PSNI collision data, local knowledge, representations from elected representatives and communities, and the professional judgement of officials.
Collision trends, including the frequency, severity and pattern of collisions, are analysed to identify locations where engineering measures are most likely to reduce risk and deliver meaningful safety benefits. Potential interventions may include collision remedial schemes, improvements to road alignment, vehicle restraint systems, and enhanced signage and road markings.
The recent Speed Limit Review consultation sought views on 20 mph limits, national speed limits on rural single and dual carriageways, and HGV speed limits, with the responses now informing the Department’s ongoing consideration of speed limit policy and measures to improve road safety.
More broadly, my Department continues to deliver the Road Safety Strategy Action Plan, which focuses on targeted interventions designed to address current and emerging road safety challenges.
Alongside road safety investment, the recently published Road Maintenance Strategy will help ensure that available resources are targeted more effectively, enabling higher quality maintenance, more durable interventions and better prioritisation of work across the road network, including rural roads.
