Answer

I have been advised by Minister Muir that DAERA was aware of the recent water pollution incident in the Ballykelly River, with the Loughs Agency leading on the investigations. DAERA staff have supported the Loughs Agency on checks of the local stormwater system, testing of foul sewers, and door-to-door checks, which have found no evidence of pollution.

Investigations indicate the incident being caused by a short duration discharge of a domestic chemical agent that quickly passed through the system.

NI Water was aware of the investigations conducted by NIEA and the Loughs Agency. Further investigations were carried out by NI Water in the surrounding area, with the storm sewers working as designed and no evidence of any chemical agents or other inappropriate material.
