Answer

My Department’s Code of Practice for the Welfare of Cats already recommends that owners ensure their cats are identified, using either a collar or microchip. However, I am aware that from 10 June 2024, the microchipping of pet cats in England will become mandatory.

I am considering the compulsory microchipping of pet cats in the context of all pressing needs for animal welfare reform in Northern Ireland. However, ultimately, my capacity to enact legislation will be constrained by the resources available to me and the time left in this shortened mandate.
